Salta was thus our last stop in Argentina and we are glad we did it. It is a beautiful town which has the best preserved colonial buildings in Argentina. In addition it also has a nice relaxed vibe and nice parks and green areas where the people gather and enjoy the day. As it was our last day in Argentina, we not only had some more great street food, but also treated ourselves to a delicious Asado of baby goat and one final bottle of wine from this region here. We had checked in a wine shop before, if here maybe one of the very high class wines like Angelica Zapata or Rutini are within our budget, but it was still out of reach. We were not willing to spend so much money on a bottle of wine, when we would get a whole day tour for it somewhere else :). So, we leave Argentina with many wonderful experiences in this country and many things we did not do or try yet as well. We will definitely come back one day to explore some of the areas in more depths. Good bye Argentina!

We had three days here, after arriving early in the morning after an overnight bus ride from Santiago.  The first day we took it slow and only visited one vineyard that was recommended to us by a Swiss young couple in Chile. Bodega La Azul was really lovely, a very small authentic family estate with fantastic wine that we tasted in their beautiful garden. It was the perfect start to our time here. The next day, we took a break from wine and instead slept, walked around the city and had some Mate tea. On the third day, we decided to hire bikes to discover some more vineyards.  The vineyards we went to were all beautiful and of good quality, however we have to say cycling here was not as idyllic and fun as in New Zealand. I think here it is better to hire a car and just visit one or two vineyards a day. It is also difficult to go anywhere without a reservation, so the 2 vineyards we actually came to see (Chandon & Angelica Zapata) were booked out or you had to book an expensive tour. That part we did not like about Mendoza. Other than that, the vineyards were lovely. Especially Tierras Altas was very unique, as we could try wine from the tanks, the barrel and the bottles and the same Malbec at different temperatures. It was a real tasting, where you learned all the differences, big or small!

So we took another bus on the 22nd December from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes. It was a 4 hour bus journey further north along many more lovely lakes and a beautiful scenery. When we got to San Martin we were really happy to see it is a cute little town where we could enjoy a nice quiet Christmas together. Our airbnb flat also was just as we hoped, small and cute. And so we started baking, cooking and enjoying the sunshine inbetween. We had a wonderful Christmas time there! On Christmas day, we then decided to go for a short hike around the lakes. I baked a fresh bread in the morning, Mathias packed a Christmas dinner left-over picnic and off we went. I did not know then that Mathias had another surprise waiting for me… .

It sounds aweful, but really it wasn’t that bad, even though we could not feel a thing in our bottoms after that ;). We arrived in Bariloche, also known as the Argentinian Swiss or Lake District, on the 19. December in the evening. We were happy with our cozy wooden hut hostel and slept like babies after that trip. The next day we took it slowly and discovered the lovely town during misty weather, while we were happy to then go on a biciycle tour the following day in perfect sunshine. We cycled to the old Swiss colony town and further to some nice lookout points over the lakes. In the evening we treated ourselves to a very lovely Swiss cheese fondue and tried the local chocolateries for desert. It was a nice pre-Christmas time to start getting us into the spirit.

Only 3 hours away from El Chalten and starting point for a visit to the famous Glacier Perito Moreno. It is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that is growing. It is about 5 kilometres wide, with an average height of 60 m above the surface of the water of Argentino Lake. The best of all is however that you can watch ice falling off the glacier if you wait long enough. We watched the spectacle for 4 hours and could not get enough of it, as you can see in the pictures. It was simply impressive. This excursion only lasted for half a day, so we also had time to relax a bit in El Calafate, study some Spanish in the sunshine, enjoy delicous local ice cream and try another local stew specialty, cazuela de cordero, and fresh oven baked empanadas. Mmmhhhh… .

El Chalten is a little town in Argentina nestled inbetween a valley of gorgeous mountains and lakes of which the spiky 3400 m high mount Fitz Roy stands out as the highlight of the scenery. After a whole day of bus travel through the beautiful Anden landscape, we arrived there in the early evening hours. We got told that the next day should start with nice sunshine, but that the weather was finally turning for the worse in the afternoon. We had been so lucky so far in Patagonia with no real rainy days. So we aimed to do the impossible and hike to mount Fitz Roy and mount Torre in one day. It would be a 40km hike, normally done in 2 days. We started early and made good time going up to our first destination: Laguna de los tres. The final hour up there was quite exhausting though, as it was a non-stop steep climb for 1 hour that seemed to last forever. The reward was however stunning! We had our lunch up there, struggling a little to keep our food and ourselves from flying away due to the strong wind. After a long break we descended again, moving on to our next destination, the base of mount Torre. We could already see the clouds covering big parts of the sky however. By the time we got to the road crossing close to the Torre base 3 hours later, it had started raining a bit and mount Torre was hardly visible at all due to the cloud cover. We met other hikers who had the same idea as us, but had given up on the idea to go all the way to mount Tore that day as well. So we took the other turn back to town which was still another 3 hours away and were surprised to be walking towards a blue sky, while behind us the bad weather was starting. But that is Patagonia, sun and warmth one minute, rain and wind the other. In the end it was ‚only‘ a 30km day hike, but we were very tired. I wander if we would have made the 40km at all… . We treated ourselves to a local hearty stew, locra, and refilled our fluid levels with locally brewed beer. A perfect ending to the day. The next morning it was already time to move on again.

We stayed here for 3 days, enjoyed the little town at this remote part of the world and went hiking in the National Park. It was a lovely start to our Patagonia tour. We took a bus from here to Puerto Natales in Chile to go hiking in Torre del Paine.
