We learned how to cook some typical Colombian dishes in a cooking session with my aunt and also tried lots of local food again :). Strolling around the city, we also took the time here to buy new clothes for us. After wearing the same clothes for a year, it was time to invest into a new wardrobe for a smooth integration into society again. Thanks so much to all my family for taking the time to show us around.

We headed towards the Zona Cafetero, which is as the name says the area in Colombia with all the coffee plantations. Nicely situated between Cali and Medellin, it was the perfect route on our way to my other part of the family in Medellin. The first night we stopped at my cousin’s Finca near lake Calima. It was a bit cloudy when we arrived in the evening, but the next morning was beautiful and we were amazed by the stunning views from the house. We continued on, having breakfast on the road along with the truck drivers, just like Mathias loves it :). We drove through the beautiful country full of coffee and fruit plantations left and right and came to Salento, another cute little colorful town. We of course visited a coffee farm where we learned everything there is to know about coffee in Colombia. And everywhere on the trip we saw stunning tropical birds all around us.

We flew here from Quito and visited my uncle Ciro and my cousins. We spent three lovely days with them and they showed us around their city. It was a full program from getting to know the local food of course, the old part of town, the salsa culture and spending time with the family. On the fourth day we started our road trip with my uncle and drove to Popayan. Popayan is one of the oldest towns in Colombia and after Cartagena the second best preserved colonial town.

It is a famous spot to see beautiful butterflies and birds. Of course, Mathias wanted to go there :). We did a day trip there and first visited a chocolate farm for me and later went on a small hike. I managed to take a few pictures of some of the butterflies with the tablet, but the birds were just too quick or too far away for the camera :).

Quito surprised us a bit, as it was very clean and organized compared to other South American cities. We went through our usual program of discovering the food in the city :). Quito has a fantastic central market, where locals go to eat for lunch. Of course, this was our spot as well. Between all the meals we strolled around the city, discovering its new and its old parts. On our last night there, we even came upon the military band playing local dance music for the people on the streets! It was so much fun and such a great atmosphere. You won’t ever find this in Germany :).

We would not have thought that it can get even better, but it did. We had the best snorkelling experiences here and the small and tiny port of Isabella was full of wildlife all the time.
