Our next destination was El Calafate. Only 3 hours away from El Chalten and starting point for a visit to the famous Glacier Perito Moreno. It is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that is growing. It is about 5 kilometres wide, with an average height of 60 m above the surface of the water of Argentino Lake. The best of all is however that you can watch ice falling off the glacier if you wait long enough. We watched the spectacle for 4 hours and could not get enough of it, as you can see in the pictures. It was simply impressive. This excursion only lasted for half a day, so we also had time to relax a bit in El Calafate, study some Spanish in the sunshine, enjoy delicous local ice cream and try another local stew specialty, cazuela de cordero, and fresh oven baked empanadas. Mmmhhhh… .
