We spend half a day there admiring the view and wildlife we discovered and of course walked up to Cape Point for the obligatory kiss for a life full of good hope together. After that we drove to Cape Town where we dropped off our car. We checked into our hostel and then spent the rest of the day enjoying the evening sun at the waterfront and habour, having a lovely dinner and watching a sea lion playing around in the water. The next day we literally discovered Cape Town by foot. We started walking at 11 am and reached our destination at 5 pm. 😉 And all the time we walked along the coastline until we reached one of the better areas in Cape Town, where there is a promenade with nice restaurants along the beach.  We treated ourselves to one last nice meal, in exchange for not having the chance to hike up Table Mountain as it was too cloudy, and also because it was our last evening in South Africa. The next morning we got up early to see the colourful neighbourhood BoCap and then it was already time to head to the airport. Believe it or not, our 6 weeks in South Africa flew by in no time.  We were sad to leave amd would have loved to stay longer for sure.

Our first stop was Franschoek,  which is a small town surrounded by mountains about 1 hour outside of Cape Town. We arrived just before for sunset and had a beautiful view over the valley. We stayed at a hiking lodge, where we could camp in the garden. It was a really lovely decorated place. We went for dinner in this cute little town and then went to bed early. The next day we started early with a delicious farmers breakfast and then started our tour of the vineyards. We spent the morning in Franschoek visiting 3 different vineyards and then drove 20 min on to Stellenbosch, the bigger and more known vineyard town in South Africa. We ended the day with a mouth watering 5 star dinner at one of the vineyards. And there again was one of the reasons travelling in South Africa is so wonderful. The dinner was comparable to a 5 star restaurant in Europe amd yet we only paid 40 EUR for a 3 course meal for 2 including a bottle of wine. The value you get for your money here is simply fantastic! It was a fabulous ending to our day in the wine region.

We had sacrificed our whole day of whale watching for this place though and had to get to Franschoek valley by the end of the day for our wine tasting tour the next day. We had time to drive there via Hermanus, the most renown whale watching spot, but could only stay there for 2 hours maximum and hope we see some whales from the shore line. It didn’t make too much sense time vice and we had learned by now that animals don’t appear just because you want to, but in the end we decided to try our luck. We arrived in Hermanus which turned out to be a really cute seaside town and walked to the shore to sit down and have some lunch. As it turned out, lunch had to wait. After 5 minutes of being there you could suddenly see people jumping up and pointing to the sea. I could not believe my eyes, there were really 3 whales coming to our bay!! We totally forgot that we were hungry and followed them along the shore and watched as they jumped out of the water and had a lot of fun splashing back in. They stayed around for almost 1 hour! We could not believe our luck, we only had a 2 hour time window and actually saw 3 whales. Some people come to South Africa and never see them and others stay around and wait for days. We felt so lucky!! Our second ocean encounter was on the way to Cape of Good Hope, where there is a famous beach called Boulders Beach that is home to a big penguin colony. The South African penguines are so tiny and cute, it was as well a real pleasure to watch them in action.

It was recommended to us by a local from the wilderness reserve. The name resort it actually misleading I think, as it is not a full service resort, but rather a place with 8 self-catering chalets at the end of a long, long dirt road that seems to lead into the ocean. We were lucky and had the very first chalet at the front. Already driving to the chalet was an impressive sight as it looked like you were driving into the water. When we stepped out onto our terrace,  we were absolutely stunned. The view was unbelievable and the feeling you got standing there is impossible to put into words. As if you are standing on the edge of the earth, all you see is endless ocean and there is noone else around but you!! There are no shops, restaurants, houses, tourists or even internet. Nothing! The last time we had a similar feeling was on our amazing hut on the Togean Islands, except here the world seemed even bigger and more alive with the massive waves splashing against the shore. We could not believe our luck! We quickly went into town, which was a 20 min drive away, did our grocery shopping and then went back and did not leave the place for 2 days. It was heaven on earth for us! For some reason this place touched our souls very deeply. I baked fresh bread, Mathias made a barbecue one night and grilled fish the other and inbetween we would look at each other and simply say: I cannot believe how beautiful this place is! The sunset on our second night was pure magic, filling the whole sky with a pink colour I had never seen before. We did not want to leave at all, but we were already a day short and had cancelled a day of whale watching in Hermanus. We had to keep going to make it to Cape Town in time if we still wanted to see the vineyards and Cape of Good Hope. We left with a wonderful feeling though,  because we had discovered another paradise spot for us! We will definitely be back here and then just disappear from the face of the earth into our paradise world for longer.

A friend of mine had recommended a place with ocean view, but unfortunately when we got there everything was booked out. So we went to a nearby guesthouse which also turned out quite cute and we were just happy to have a warm bed after 3 nights of camping in the rain. The evening was also still a bit misty, however when we got up in the morning we again and a nice sunny sky. This time, it also stayed that way and the whole next few days turned out beautifully sunny. We got up and went to the beach and fell in love with it in an instant. It did not take long and we decided to stay a bit longer in this place. We had lunch at a bistro situated right on the cliff overlooking the ocean. As if the view was not already amazing enough, we suddenly saw a group of dolphins swimming by and sticking around and surfing on the waves. It was simply fantastic to see them playing around. Because the weather was nice again, we spent the next 2 nights on a stunning campground situated directly at the Keuerboom lagoon. The place was so peaceful and we had it once again all to ourselves. We spent the next day on the beach simply enjoying the view and the sun, in the evening Mathias cooked a lovely dinner on the beach for me while we watched the sunset. When we left the next day to drive on to another place that was recommended to us by locals, we were sad to leave. Time always seems too short! We did not know then that the next place would leave us breathless again…. 😉

The Garden Route basically starts here and this park is another famous hikers destination. By the time we arrived it was misty and raining a bit again though. The lagoon and beach looked mystic. We camped in the park and got up early the next day to go hiking. We started on a sunny morning, but unfortunately after 1 hour of hiking it started raining again. We took out our rain gear and kept on hiking, hoping it would only last shortly. When it was still raining 3 hours later and our feet were soaked completely,  we decided we had enough. The sky looked nicer down south, so we packed our things and drove on to our next destination: Keuerboomstrand.

It is situated in the Eastern Cape region and stretches along the coastline between Durban and Port Elizabeth. For now it is mostly a vacation spot for locals, backpackers and surfers. The coast ist wilder and rougher than the Garden Route coastline and the towns and infrastructure far less developed. A lot of it is still gravel road towards the end. As you might imagine, we really enjoyed it. We first arrived in Coffee Bay and stayed at a backpackers place that had safari tents with a great view over the river and ocean in the back. When we arrived it was again shortly before sunset and it had been raining almost all day. We were happy to have a safari tent with a bed for the night after having slept through 2 rainy nights in our tent. We had a lovely home-made dinner from the place and went to bed early. When we woke up the next day, we awoke to a beautiful sunset visible directly from our bed. We got up and went for a walk on the beach. When we turned around we saw the dog from the backpackers place following us. I do not know what it is with dogs on this trip, but somehow they seem to be drawn to us. Anyway it was incredible how he walked and listened to us, as if we would go for a walk with him every morning. :) The coast and the waves were beautiful. It was impressive to see the massive waves and the brave surfers trying to tackle them. Last time we had seen similar waves was in Australia along the Great Ocean Road. The waves here though were even bigger. In fact, there are signs everywhere warning people and forbidding swimming. After our morning walk, we drove 4 hours further along the coast to Chintsa. After a short sunny morning, it had started to rain again and even though it had stopped when we got there, it was still misty and a bit drizzling. We found a campsite that we had completely to ourselves. We went for a stroll along the beach and discovered that it was not as rough aymore as Coffee Bay. The sand was fine and pure and the waves had carved beautiful smooth little pools into the stones, which were full of life and looked like small little aquariums. It awakened the explorer in Mathias and we walked along the beach exploring and collecting beautiful treasures of the ocean. We went back to the campsite to make a fire and cook some dinner. When we woke up in the morning, we were lucky again. The sun had come out and we of course went to the beach once more. The sand and water was shining and sparkling in the morning sun and Mathias could not help himself. He did his morning exercises and went for a swim in the ice-cold Indian Ocean. I prefered to stay warm and be responsible for the stunnig pictures instead :)! What a shame we had to leave again, but we had 7 hours of driving in front of us, before we would reach the beginning of the Garden Route.

We arrived on a beautiful sunset evening after 13 hours of driving and found ourselves on a stunning campsite surrounded by animals. Our first day was wonderfully sunny and we did a 8 hours hike to the so called Amphitheater. In the evening we drove 1 1/2 hours further to the Cathedral Peak area. Again we arrived with a beautiful sunset backdrop of the mountain. The next day was misty and it was drizzling though, so instead of a full day hike we did 2 half day hikes instead, allowing us to warm up inbetween. Despite the weather it was still beautiful. Everything felt quite mystic.
